This study aims to analyzedifferences in AES encryption
performance across key lengths
of 128, 192, and 256 bits within
a Node.js environment. Experiments
were conducted on a laptop equipped
with an Intel Core i5-12500H process
or and Node.js version 24.15.0.
A controlled benchmarking method was
employed, involving the encryption of
synthetic files ranging from 1 KB
to 10 MB over 10 iterations per
configuration. Test results indicate
that AES-256 incurs a time overhead
of approximately 25% compared to
AES-128 for small files; however,
this difference becomes negligible
—or even negative—for large files.
This phenomenon is attributed to A
ES-NI hardware optimization in mode
rn processors. The study offers
practical recommendations to help
developers select the AES
configuration best suited to their
application requirements.
